The gift of play

November 10, 2025 in News

Thanks to generous donations, a new therapeutic playground has been created at Shaftesbury Victoria School – designed to be a space where every child can play, learn, and grow.

The outdoor space has been transformed and new play equipment, including climbing frames, gym equipment, a light tunnel, mud kitchen and sensory items, installed.

Designed in collaboration with the school’s occupational therapy team, the equipment chosen will help build students’ strength and coordination, support sensory processing, and promote cognitive development.

Work was completed in the summer and students enjoyed exploring the playground before the half-term break.

With input from our Student Council, the playground has been named ‘Voyager Playground’ – a name that reflects the creativity and spirit of exploration within our school.

Class Alum teacher Ellie Higgins said:

‘Our new playground will provide exciting new opportunities for learning and wellbeing. With features like climbing frames to build strength and coordination, a light tunnel to inspire creativity and curiosity, and a mud kitchen to encourage imaginative and hands-on play, children will be able to explore, experiment, and learn through active play.

‘This stimulating environment will support physical health, social development, and emotional wellbeing, helping our students to learn, grow, and thrive.’
